WILMINGTON, Ohio - The Wilmington College women's soccer team will host Earlham College for the annual Quaker Bowl rivalry game on Wednesday with a 7 p.m. start time.
The Teams: Wilmington and Earlham. The Fightin' Quakers are 2-2-0 after a 3-0 victory over Bethany College (W.V.) on Saturday. The Hustlin' Quakers are 5-1-0 after a 3-2 win over Principia on Saturday.
The Coaches: Steve Spirk enters his 28th season as Wilmington's head women's soccer coach. Spirk, a 1982 alumnus, has led the Quakers to six NCAA Division III Tournaments, eight conference championships and over 300 victories during his tenure. A member of the Wilmington Athletics Hall of Fame, Spirk was a four-time All-American and holds several of the College's men's soccer records. Chad Hardin is in his fourth season as head women's soccer coach at Earlham, in 2018 he lead the Hustin' Quakers to a 9-9-0 record, the teams first .500 or better result since 2012.
The Players: Freshman Taylor Huffman earned the honor of Ohio Athletic Conference women's soccer offensive player of the week for games played last week. Huffman scored four goals including a hat trick against Cincinnati Christian and dished out three assists to earn the honor. Freshman Maddie Scott has also scored four goals and recorded one assist. Lauren Galloway has made 12 saves in goal in the Fightin' Quakers' four games and only allowed two goals. Eva Lyon has scored five goals for the Hustlin' Quakers, a mark that leads the team. Mel Johnson recorded 21 stops as goalkeeper for Earlham in the first five games of the season.
Series History: Wilmington is 7-2-0 against Earlham since 1993, Wilmington has been victorious in the past six meetings.
Quaker Bowl Rivalry: The athletics departments of Wilmington and Earlham have re-created the Quaker Bowl rivalry. Originally a traveling trophy for just football and men's basketball, the bowl will now be competed for across all sports the two schools compete in. Wilmington has won the last two years including a 6-4 win over the 2018-19 academic year.
