Women's Soccer Defeats Defiance 3-0

WILMINGTON, Ohio - The Wilmington College women's soccer team defeated Defiance College 3-0 on Saturday afternoon.

The Fightin' Quakers are now 5-2-1 heading into Ohio Athletic Conference competition. The Yellow Jackets' record falls to 4-5-1.

"We played a lot of players today, which was important as we need everyone working hard and committed as we move into Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play," Head Women's Soccer Coach Steve Spirk.

Wilmington applied offensive pressure early with a pair of promising shots in the 11th minute from Madison Wiedeman and Riley Allison. Then in the 19th minute another opportunity came by Maddie Scott taking a shot that was deflected by Yellow Jackets goalkeeper Madi Bowman for a corner kick. The first goal for the Quakers came in the 34th minute when Abby Spirk took a penalty kick awarded for handling by Defiance. In the 39th minute Freshman Brianna Waller pressured the Yellow Jacket defense into an own goal on a miscommunicated pass to Bowman. The final goal was scored by Tiffany hayes who found herself on the end on a corner kick that was knocked away by Bowman. The Quakers would get one final chance at a goal in the 61st minute when Taylor Huffman stormed down the field on a break away but could not manage to beat Bowman on the shot. 

Wilmington took a commanding lead in shots 17-3 and corner kicks 7-2. 

Lauren Galloway earned the win for the Quakers, sharing time with Payton Pakozdi with neither goalkeeper making a save. Bowman received the loss for the Yellow Jackets with two saves. 

The Quakers will have a week to prepare to travel to Heidelberg University to begin OAC competition at 1 p.m. next Saturday.
