WILMINGTON, Ohio – Capital University opened the third quarter on a 14-4 run and held the lead to defeat the Wilmington College women's basketball team 64-57 in Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) action from Hermann Court on Wednesday evening.
Just like the Quakers' last contest, they fell behind 9-2 early. Three straight scores from McKayla Binkley, Zahrya Bailey and Ellen Nilback kept pace with the Crusaders in the middle stages of the first quarter, but a three-pointer from Cassidy Bosch gave the visitors a 23-13 lead after 10 minutes.
Wilmington score on 4-of-6 possession to open the second quarter including consecutive triples from Hannah Binkley and Kelly Noll to get within two points (26-24) at the 7:27 mark of the second quarter. Three minutes later, a Michelle Lee tied the game 30-30 when Bailey found her for a basket. After a Crusader turnover, Lee was fouled while shooting and made 1-of-2 to give the Quakers their first lead of the game. Neither team led by more than a possession through the rest of the half.
Leading 36-34 at halftime, Capital held Wilmington to four points over the first eight minutes of the third quarter while scoring 14 points. By the time the third quarter ended, the Quakers found themselves down double digits, 52-41.
Six straight points from McKayla Binkley followed by a triple from Brooke Davis got the Quakers within five points (55-50) with six minutes to play. Another triple from Davis three minutes later cut the Capital lead to two points. Wilmington wouldn't get the ball back with a chance to tie it, however, as Regan Stonerock scored on the ensuing possession. With the score 61-57, a Cassidy Bosch triple with 90 seconds to play sealed the game.
Both teams shot over 40 percent from the field and exactly 75.0 percent from the charity stripe. Wilmington converted 6-of-14 (42.9 percent) from distance while Capital made just 4-of-14 (28.6 percent) from beyond the arc, but the Crusaders made six more field goals and won the battle of the boards 36-27.
Bosch led all scorers with 22 points on 9-of-15 shooting while Stonerock turned in a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds for Capital.
McKayla Binkley led Wilmington with 19 points while Bailey added 10 to go along with seven assists. Noll, playing in her final collegiate game at Hermann Court, scored seven points and led the Quakers with seven rebounds.
Wilmington (11-13, 7-10 OAC) heads to John Carroll University for the regular season finale on Saturday.
