WILMINGTON, Ohio - Five Quakers scored in double figures as the Wilmington College women's basketball team hit the century mark in a 102-93 Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) win over the University of Mount Union on Saturday.
Wilmington scored the first seven points of the game including a game-opening layup from Kennedy Lewis and five points from Kelis Jones. Mount Union, which utilized the three-point field goal, particularly in the first half, hit two triples at the end of the first quarter its first lead of the game at 20-19. McKayla Binkley got the ball up court quickly and found her sister, Hannah, for a three-pointer at the buzzer.
The second quarter was played at a torrid pace as both teams made a dozen field goals and shot over 50 percent from the field. In total, Wilmington tallied 36 points while Mount Union had 32 in the quarter. The Quakers would lead by as many as 11, but once again, the Purple Raiders hit two late triples to cut the deficit to 58-52 at halftime.
Wilmington outscored Mount Union 25-15 in the third quarter to lead by 16 (83-67) after three, and that lead would grow to 21 on a Zahrya Bailey free throw a minute into the fourth. The Purple Raiders wouldn't go away totally, however, as a 16-2 run got the visitors within six (96-90) with 2:26 to play. Layups from Michelle Lee and McKayla Binkley that followed sealed the victory.
The Quakers finished 35-of-71 (49.3 percent) from the field, 11-of-20 (55.0 percent) from beyond the arc and 21-of-25 (84.0 percent) from the free throw line. The Purple Raiders countered with 34-of-80 (42.5 percent) from the field, 13-of-31 (41.9 percent) from distance and 12-of-17 (70.6 percent) from the charity stripe.
Mount Union held a slight 46-41 edge in rebounding. The game was played very clean from both sides are the two squads both finished with single-digit turnovers.
Individually, McKayla Binkley tied her career high in scoring with 22 points on 7-of-11 shooting and seven rebounds. Lee missed her career high by a point, tallying 21 points and an 8-of-10 performance from the field. Hannah Binkley (18 points) and Brooke Davis (11 points) both had season-high games in the scoring column while Kelly Noll grabbed a career-high 10 boards.
Mount Union was led by Tori Rappach with 24 points in defeat. Hannah Schaefer added 19 points on 8-of-11 shooting off the bench.
Wilmington (5-3, 2-1 OAC) returns to action on Wednesday for an exhibition game at Shawnee State University.
