WILMINGTON, Ohio – For the second time in as many years, Heidelberg University came to Hermann Court and defeated the Wilmington College women's basketball team. The Student Princes overcame a six-point halftime deficit to earn a 71-68 Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) win on Saturday afternoon.
The first quarter featured both teams leading by as many as five points. A Kelly Noll three-pointer at the 6:30 mark gave the Quakers an 11-6 advantage, but the Student Princes battled back to lead 20-15 on an offensive rebound and put back at the buzzer. The second quarter was much different as Wilmington's defense held Heidelberg to 15.4 percent shooting. The hosts, on the other hand, made 9-of-19 shots (47.4 percent) from the field to score 20 points and take a 35-29 lead into halftime.
Heidelberg answered with a 21-12 third quarter fueled by nine points from Brittanie Ulmer to regain a 50-47 advantage after 30 minutes. In the fourth quarter, it was Brooke Beamer who led the Student Princes to victory, scoring a dozen of her 24 points in the period.
Wilmington did hold a two-point lead on two occasions in the final three minutes, but each time, the Student Princes had the answer, including a go-ahead triple with 1:27 to play.
The Quakers finished 27-of-67 (40.3 percent) from the field and 6-of-15 (40.0 percent) from beyond the three-point arc, but made just 8-of-14 (57.1 percent) of their free throw attempts. The Student Princes made 28-of-77 (36.4 percent) from the field, 4-of-18 (22.2 percent) from distance and 11-of-16 (68.8 percent) from the charity stripe.
The visitors won the rebounding battle 50-44 including 16 offensive rebounds. Additionally, unlike the first matchup, Heidelberg turned the ball over just nine times compared to 15 for Wilmington.
Beamer led all scorers with 24 points while Ulmer added 19 for Heidelberg in victory. Maddy Crawford turned in a double-double with 10 points and 15 rebounds while Alli Adelsperger also scored in double figures.
McKayla Binkley led the Quakers in scoring with 19 points and rebounding with a dozen boards to go along with two steals and two blocks. Noll finished with 17 points on 6-of-12 shooting while Kennedy Lewis added 13 points, six rebounds and five assists.
Wilmington (9-10, 5-7 OAC) will attempt to snap a three-game losing streak by hosting Otterbein University on Wednesday.
