Capital Sweeps Volleyball 3-0

BEXLEY, Ohio – Capital University avenged a loss from 2018 with a straight-set, 25-19, 25-17, 25-15 victory over the Wilmington College volleyball team in an Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) match at the Capital Center on Tuesday evening.

Neither team led by more than three points in the early stages of the first set. A kill from Jillian Wesco followed by a Crusader attack error tied the set 15-15. Capital immediately got a side out and rattled off three points off the serve of Jordan Miranda to take a 19-15 lead. Wilmington Head Coach Andy Riesenberg called a timeout attempting to stop the run, but Jordan served three more times to give the hosts an insurmountable lead.

The Fightin' Quakers opened set two on a 9-5 run using three kills from Wesco and a Morgan Loomis service run. Once again, Jordan stepped up to the service line and gave Capital five straight points to get the hosts right back in the set. Neither team would lead by more than two points in the middle portion of the set. A Mariella Szrom kill gave Wilmington a 17-16 lead, but the Quakers wouldn't score another point as Lea McFadden served out the set for the Crusaders.

Set three saw Capital get out to a 17-6 lead and never look back.

The Crusaders hit a .204 clip for the match with 29 kills while the Quakers hit a .097 attack percentage and 22 kills. Capital kept Wilmington out of system with 10 service aces. The visitors held a 4-3 edge in blocks.

A trio of Quakers – Wesco, Szrom and Taylor McCuistion – finished with six kills including Szrom leading the squad with a .353 attack percentage. Wesco and McCuistion both dished out nine assists while Karley Schlensker added 11 digs.

Leighann Osborn finished with a dozen kills while Delanie Nahikian and Kirsten Jutte both had eight kills. Isabel Jimenez dished out 26 assists to go along with 10 digs.

Wilmington (3-22, 0-8 OAC) will conclude its 2019 season by hosting John Carroll University for a Senior Day game at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
