Heidelberg Handles Volleyball in Straight Sets

WILMINGTON, Ohio – Heidelberg University showed why it is among the top teams in the region as the Student Princes swept the Wilmington College volleyball team 25-18, 25-17, 25-15 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) opener for the Fightin' Quakers on Saturday afternoon.

Wilmington did hit a positive attack percentage in each set, but didn't hit over a .100 clip or tally over 10 kills in any set. Heidelberg, which is receiving votes to be ranked in the most recent American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top 25 Poll, didn't hit below .240 and had over a dozen kills in each set.

The Quaker kept the Student Princes out of system with aggressive serving early including consecutive aces from Taylor McCuistion in the first set. A lengthy service run from Meghan Koch got Wilmington within 20-18 in set one, but Heidelberg won the next five points to take the set.

Heidelberg took early leads in the final two sets to earn the victory.

Jillian Wesco tallied a season-high 14 kills for Wilmington and hit a .194 attack percentage to lead the team. McCuistion put terminated five balls and tied libero Karley Schlensker for the team lead in digs with a dozen. Mariella Szrom led the way with two block assists.

Maddie Szawranksyj was one of 10 Student Princes to finish with a kill as she led the team with 10 kills. Jordann Gudorf hit a .333 clip with eight kills while Alyssa Crusey put down seven. Heidelberg's 6-2 offense produced a combined 33 assists from Julianna Pena and Anna McNabb. Libero Sarah Oney tallied 16 digs.

Wiilmington (3-16, 0-1 OAC) hosts nationally-ranked Muskingum University on Tuesday evening.
