Volleyball Opens 2019 Season at Bulldogs Classic This Weekend

WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Wilmington College volleyball team opens its 2019 at the Adrian College Bulldogs Classic in Adrian, Michigan, this weekend.

The Schedule: Wilmington will face host Adrian at 3 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 30, followed by Albion College (Michigan) at 5 p.m. on the same day. The Fightin' Quakers will conclude the weekend with a match with Manchester University at 1 p.m.

The Teams: Wilmington, Adrian, Albion and Manchester. The Quakers finished last season with a 9-19 overall mark and concluded the campaign with consecutive Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) victories. The two Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) foes, Adrian and Albion, finished the 2018 season 9-16 and 17-12 respectively, while Manchester turned in a 7-18 campaign.

The Coaches: A new era of Wilmington volleyball has arrived as Andy Riesenberg, an experienced coach at the NCAA Division I, II, III and club levels, enters his first season leading the program in 2019. The Mount St. Joseph University alumnus has spent time at Southern Illinois University, Xavier University and Ohio University as an assistant coach as well as a stint as head coach at NCAA Division II institution Lake Erie College. David Kwan enters his eighth season at Adrian while Kristin de St. Aubin, in her sixth season at Albion, has led the Britons to consecutive conference tournament appearances. The Spartans are under the direction of second-year Head Coach Ivan Matos.

The Players: Wilmington returns two of its top three offensive players from last season in Jillian Wesco and Mariella Szrom as each averaged over 1.25 kills per set a season ago. Libero Karley Schlensker joins Wesco in returning as both tallied over 3.25 digs per set in 2018. Alex Tobler, who averaged nearly two-and-a-half kills per set as a sophomore, returns for her junior season for Adrian. Albion, on the other hand, will have to replace its top two hitters in Marie Pregenzer and Taylor Rosenthan who both averaged over 2.25 kills per set and led the team in blocks. Manchester is led by returner Samantha Campbell who tallied 161 kills in her freshman campaign.

Series History: In the last decade, Wilmington is 1-3 against Albion, winless against Manchester and has not played Adrian. More information on the series histories can be viewed by visiting the link above.
