BEAVER FALLS, Pennsylvania - The Wilmington College men's soccer team netted two goals in each half of a 4-1 victory Geneva College on Saturday afternoon.
"I honestly think this win came from yesterday's practice session as had one of our best sessions of the year," Head Coach Cory Bucur said. "Every single guy on the roster showed up to compete. We came out quite sharp and Grant Murray made an excellent run to finish a great goal. From that point on we rode the wave into a very complete performance."
The Fightin' Quakers opened the scoring in the 14th minute when senior Casey Miller fed a pass to fellow senior Grant Murray, who beat Golden Tornado netminder Gabriel Kemp to score his first goal of the season. Seven minutes later, WC earned a cornerkick, and it yielded the second goal of the game as a Geneva defender inadvertently put the ball in his own net. The visitors would fire seven shots, yield just two and take a 2-0 lead into halftime.
Miller would assist on another goal not three minutes into the second half as the Centerville High School alumnus found Wilmingotn High School alumnus Brady Vilvens for Wilmington's third goal of the game. The Quakers would take three more shots over the final 40 minutes, but one of those would go in as Elorm Dogbey, the reigning Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Offensive Player of the Week, fed a ball to Yusef Muqtadir, who buried the shot. Geneva would get on the scoreboard late, scoring a penalty kick goal as WC goalkeeper Thomas Grimes was assessed a yellow card.
Grimes earned the win in a little over 83 minutes played while Gabriel Swaisgood cleaned up the final six-plus minutes. Each Quaker goalkeeper made one save. Kemp took the loss for the Golden Tornados, allowing four goals with four saves on eight shots. Dogbey and Muqtadir both fired three shots for WC while Antonio Fiordilino scored the penalty kick for Geneva.
Wilmington (4-2-1) heads to Mount St. Joseph University for a 7 p.m. contest on Thursday, Sept. 22.
