Volleyball Heads to Michigan for Four Matches This Weekend

WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Wilmington College volleyball team heads to Michigan for four matches - two at Albion College and two at Olivet College - this weekend.

The Schedule: Wilmington will face the Britons and Wheaton College (Illinois) at 4 & 6 p.m. at respectively on Friday, Sept. 16 followed by the Comets and Spalding University at 10 a.m. & noon respectively on Saturday, Sept. 17. The matches on Friday will be played at Kresge Gymnasium on Albion's campus while the matches on Saturday will be played at the Cutler Athletic Complex on Olivet's campus.

The Teams: Wilmington, Albion, Wheaton, Olivet, Spalding. The Fightin' Quakers enter the weekend with a 3-8 overall record after a straight-set defeat at the hands of Franklin College on Tuesday. The Britons, who are ranked No. 22 in the most recent American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top 25 Poll for the first time in program history, check in at a perfect 8-0. The Thunder are 5-3 after a four-set loss to open conference play while the Comets are 2-5 on the year and looking to rebound from a defeat at Defiance College. Finally, the Eagles enter the weekend with a 1-5 record.

The Coaches: A new era of Wilmington volleyball has arrived Sophie Windover, a former collegiate player and assistant at Heidelberg University, enters her second season leading the program. She helped guide the Student Princes to a 21-8 record and an appearance in the AVCA Top 25 Poll. Kristin Slamer-De St. Aubin, a 2007 Albion alumna, is the winningest volleyball coach in Albion history while Stephanie Schmidt is in her sixth season as Wheaton's head coach. Jessica Hicks (Olivet) and Taryn Glass (Spalding) are in their first years as head coaches at their respective institutions. 

The Players: Sofia Thomas leads Wilmington offensively as the junior averages 2.36 kills per set while Sydney Geibel also puts up over 1.50 kills per set. Bailey Pohlman and Joy Bebe have combined for 39 blocks while libero Blake O'Brien averages nearly six digs per set in the back row. Setter Andie Dolven has dished out 6.37 assists per set. Chloe Webber puts down nealry five kills a set for Albion while Wheaton's 6-2 offense is run by Lacey Higgins and Davis Whitehead who combine to dish out nearly 10 assists per set. The Comet duo of Morgan Dillon and Ellie Louiselle both hit down over two attack attemps for kills each set while Jayda Branch tallied 3.50 kills per set for Spalding.

Series History: Wilmington is 1-4 against Albion and 1-0 against Olivet in the last 13 seasons. The Quakers have not faced Wheaton or Spalding during that stretch. More information on the series history can be viewed by visiting the links above.
