WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Wilmington College volleyball team opens its 2022 season with a quartet of matches at the Charlie Wrublewski Invitational hosted by Mount St. Joseph University this weekend. 

The Schedule: The Fightin' Quakers will face rival Earlham College and Ohio Wesleyan University at 4 p.m & 6 p.m. respectively on Friday followed by perennial regional power Wittenberg University and the host Lions at noon & 2 p.m. respectively on Saturday.

The Teams: Wilmington, Earlham, Ohio Wesleyan (OWU), Wittenberg and Mount St. Joseph (MSJ). The Quakers are looking to improve upon a 4-24 record from a season ago while the Hustlin' Quakers went 20-6 on the season and fell a match short of the NCAA Division III Women's Volleyball Tournament. The Battling Bishops finished the 2012 campaign 13-14 while the Tigers went 22-9 and qualified for the NCAA Division III Women's Volleyball Tournament. Finally, the host Lions were 19-9 a year ago.

The Coaches: A new era of Wilmington volleyball has arrived Sophie Windover, a former collegiate player and assistant at Heidelberg University, enters her second season leading the program. She helped guide the Student Princes to a 21-8 record and an appearance in the AVCA Top 25 Poll. Lauren Horton, the most successful volleyball coach in school history, is in her eighth season as Earlham's head coach while Kriska Cobb is in her ninth season at OWU. Evelyn Carus-Miller is in her fifth season as Wittenberg's head coach while John Spinney will enter his fourth season as MSJ's head coach.

The Players: Wilmington returns all four individuals - Sofia Thomas, Sydney Geibel, Joy Bebe and Victoria Long - who notched over 100 kills in the fall of 2021. Additionally, setter Andie Dolven looks to captain the Quaker offense for a second consecutive season having averaged 7.36 assists per set in her freshman campaign. Veterans Macee Hamilton and Blake O'Brien bolster the WC back row with O'Brien tallying over 400 digs last season. Maria Young is EC's top returner having put down 338 kills for an average of over three-and-a-half per set while Eliza Richardson led the Battling Bishops offensively with 3.17 kills per set last year. Tyler Linkhart, as a right side for the Tigers, put down 371 kills as a sophomore in 2021 while Sam Buschur dished out over 10 assists per set for MSJ. 

Series History: Since the 2008-09 season, Wilmington is 7-13 against Earlham, 5-8 against OWU and 0-7 against MSJ. This will be the first meeting between WC and Wittenberg during that stretch. More information on the series history can be viewed by visiting the link above.
