Volleyball Falls at John Carroll in OAC Opener

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio - The Wilmington College volleyball team was within striking distance of John Carroll University (JCU) in each set, but the Blue Streaks' .304 attack percentage was too much to overcome as JCU defeated the Fightin' Quakers 25-22, 25-20, 25-20 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) opener for both teams on Saturday.

In set one, Wilmington battled back from a 19-13 deficit to get within a single point thanks to a service run from Blake O'Brien, but Lexi MacDonald served the hosts back to 24-19 and five set points. A JCU setting error, attack error and a Sarah Brown kill fought off three of those set points, but a service error ended the set. The hosts relied on their best offensive hitter, Cassi Calamunci, to close out the last two sets.

Calamunci tallied a match-high 21 kills while hitting a .436 clip while a trio of Blue Streaks - Jennifer Follmer, Abigail Kirk and Jessica Liddle - had five kills each. Kendra Dziubinksi had four blocks with two of the solo variety while setter Ally Bartolone dished out 25 assists.

Wilmington had a .129 attack percentage with Joy Bebe's nine kills leading the way. Brown hit a team-best .353 while Sofia Thomas chipped in seven kills. Setter Andie Dolven dished out 25 assists and libero Blake O'Brien had a 21-dig performance.

The Quakers (7-12, 0-1 OAC) host Capital University on Wednesday evening.
