Volleyball Heads to Rhodes Classic This Weekend

WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Wilmington College volleyball team travels to Memphis, Tennessee, and Rhodes College for the Rhodes College Classic on Friday and Saturday. 

The Schedule: The Fightin' Quakers will face Huntington College (Alabama) and Westminster College (Missouri) at 1 p.m. & 4 p.m. on Friday respectively followed by host Rhodes at 11 p.m. and LeTourneau University (Texas) at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

The Teams: Wilmington, Huntington, Westminster, Rhodes and LeTourneau. The Quakers enter the weekend with a 1-5 record having split at tri-match at Midway University on Tuesday evening. The Hawks are 3-1 and bring a three-game winning streak to the Rhodes Classic while the Blue Jays, who are 3-1 on the year, are looking to rebound from a four-set defeat at the hands of Illinois College. Both Rhodes (4-0) and LeTourneau (2-0) enter the weekend unbeaten.

The Coaches: A new era of Wilmington volleyball has arrived Sophie Windover, a former collegiate player and assistant at Heidelberg University, enters her second season leading the program. She helped guide the Student Princes to a 21-8 record and an appearance in the AVCA Top 25 Poll. Latonia Brady is in her eighth season as Huntington's head coach while Dalton Tucker is in his second was leading the Westminster program. Peter Griffin is early in his third season as Rhodes head coach while Alison Wells is LeTourneau head coach.

The Players: Sofia Thomas leads the Wilmington offense averaging 2.15 kills per set with Lili Green also putting down over 1.5 kills per set. Libero Blake O'Brien bolsters the back row to the tune of over five digs per set while Joy Bebe has a team-best eight blocks. Huntington utilizes a 6-2 offensive scheme as Jessi Hilyer and Morgan Ilsley combine to dish out nearly 10 assists per set while a quartet of Blue Jays - Eryka Wanyonyi, Haley Menke, Malena Bixby and Celissa Kennedy - put down over two kills per set. Rhodes also runs a two-setter system as Brenna Weyant and Gabriele Kozik combine to assist on nearly 10 Lynx kills per set. Finally, Hannah Payan leads the Yellow Jacket offense by putting down 4.38 kills per set.

Series History: This will be the first match between Wilmington and all four opponents in the last 15 seasons.
