Men's Soccer Opens 2019 Campaign With Cincinnati State Saturday

WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Wilmington College men's soccer team opens its 2019 season on Saturday evening when Cincinnati State University comes to Williams Stadium for a 7:30 p.m. contest.

The Teams: Wilmington and Cincinnati State. The Fightin' Quakers are looking to improve on a 9-8-0 campaign that saw them barely miss the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Tournament with a 4-5-0 conference mark. The 2018 results for Cincinnati State were not available.

The Coaches: Alex Van der Sluijs is in his second year leading Wilmington's men's soccer team. The 2007 alumnus, who was a three-time First Team All-OAC selection and a member of the program's only team to win an OAC title in 2004, worked at Defiance College for seven seasons. Joel Carey is Cincinnati State's head women's soccer coach.

The Players: Wilmington will need to replace Niklas Martensson, who departed via graduation. The Swede turned in one of the best individual single-season performances in the NCAA era (1991-present) having scored 16 goals and totaled 37 points. Nati Wallis, who netted his first career hat trick a season ago, return for his senior campaign. Goalkeeper Felix Maurer, who started all but a half in net in 2018, returns for his sophomore campaign having a 1.75 goals against average. Statistics for Cincinnati State were not available.

Series History: Wilmington is has not played Cincinnati State in the last three decades.

Team IMPACT Signing: Ben Wyers, a 12-year old with the immune disorder CVID, will sign with the Wilmington men's soccer team at halftime.
