(SPRINGFIELD, Ohio) – The Wilmington College baseball team played a single game against the Wittenberg University Tigers Sunday afternoon on the road. They lost the contest 11-2. A six-run bottom of the fourth inning for Wittenberg dashed the Quakers hopes of picking up the win. Carter Scheben and Riley Sims both had runs batted in (RBI) in the game for Wilmington.
The Quakers struck first in the top of the first inning. After an out, a pair of singles gave Wilmington runners at first and third base after some solid baserunning. This allowed Carter Scheben to do his job and hit a sacrifice fly to score the first run of the game and give the Quakers a 1-0 lead. Wittenberg answered immediately with three runs in the bottom of the frame.
The Tigers would score another in the bottom of the second for a 4-1 advantage. Another seven runs would be plated over the following innings for Wittenberg to hold an 11-1 lead.
Evan Kelsey singled to start the sixth inning for Wilmington. He advanced to second on a passed ball, but no further damage would be done as Wittenberg escaped the inning.
The Quakers got back on the board in the seventh with a single run to cut the lead to 11-2. A pair of singles and a stolen base put runners at the corners with nobody out. After an out, Riley Sims hit a single to center field to plate a run for Wilmington. However, Wittenberg scored one more run to give the Tigers a 12-2 advantage in the bottom of the seventh and win the game.
