Baseball Bested by Hanover in Home Opener

(WILMINGTON, Ohio) – The Wilmington College baseball team fell in their home opener at Tewksbury-Delaney Field Wednesday afternoon against the Hanover College Panthers, 6-2. Wilmington fell into a 4-1 hole after three innings and couldn't claw themselves out of it. Three Quakers had a pair of hits in the game as the team falls to 1-10 overall this season. They return to their home field for a weekend series with the Alma College Scots beginning on Saturday afternoon.

The Panthers got the scoring started with a two-run homerun in the first inning and would hit a sacrifice fly for a single run in the second frame and an early 3-0 lead. J.C. Calhoun cut into the lead for the Quakers with a two-out RBI single to score AJ Wolf, who walked to begin the inning. This made the score to 3-1.  

Hanover scored again in the third inning for a 4-1 advantage. The Quakers had a runner at third base with nobody out in the fourth after a Carter Scheben triple to start the frame, but they couldn't bring him home. Kyle Jennings had an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth inning for Wilmington to score their final run of the game. The Quakers had runners in scoring position in the sixth and seventh innings, but would ultimately fall, 6-2.

Notables

  • Evan Kelsey, Carter Scheben, and J.C. Calhoun all had two hits for Wilmington.
  • Scheben also walked twice in the game.
  • Kelsey and AJ Wolf scored the runs for the Quakers.
  • Wilmington had eight strikeouts on the mound, with Max Gildea leading the way with five over his five innings of work.
