(WILMINGTON, Ohio) – The Wilmington College baseball team was in action at Tewksbury-Delaney Field for the second time this week, as they took on the Alma College Scots in a doubleheader Sunday afternoon. The Quakers won game one 5-4 thanks to a walk-off hit from freshman Max Gildea but were unable to complete their comeback effort in game two, falling 6-5. Wilmington is now 2-11 overall this season and are right back at home Tuesday afternoon against the Wittenberg University Tigers.

Game One – Wilmington defeats Alma, 5-4 (8 innings)

The Quakers fell behind 3-0 after the first two innings of play in the first contest. Wilmington had runners in scoring position in both frames but couldn't plate any runs.

Wilmington struck for a game-tying three runs in the bottom of the third. After an out, Evan Kelsey singled and stole second before a walk put runners at first and second with one out. Kyle Jennings roped a double to right center field to bring in both runners and cut the lead to 3-2. A pair of wild pitches would bring in Jennings to tie the game 3-3.

The Scots scored one run in the top of the fourth to retake the lead at 4-3. The bottom of the fifth brought in the tying run for Wilmington in the form of a JP Donelan sacrifice fly to right field to bring home Carter Scheben. Scheben walked earlier in the inning and a Gabe McDowell double put him at third base with one out.

With the first game scheduled for seven innings, the Quakers had a chance to win it in the bottom of the seventh. Dominic Depa doubled to left center field with one out, but a double play later in the inning fizzled out the Quakers rally.

Wilmington held the Scots scoreless in the eighth, and the Quakers were in business after a Donelan double and J.C. Calhoun sacrifice bunt put Donelan at third base with one out. A pair of intentional walks loaded the bases, but an out put the Quakers in danger of not scoring. Max Gildea halted these concerns with a rocket through the left side of the infield to score Donelan and win the game.

Game Two – Alma defeats Wilmington, 6-5 (7 innings)

Alma scored one run in the top of the first inning, but the Quakers struck for two in the bottom of the frame to take a 2-1 lead. An Evan Kelsey single was followed by a Jared Lammert double to put runners on the corners with nobody out. Kyle Jennings had an RBI groundout that scored Kelsey and kept Lammert at second. Later in the inning, Carter Scheben hit a single up the middle to plate Lammert and give Wilmington a 2-1 lead.

The Scots immediately scored two more runs in the top of the second to take a 3-2 lead. This lead would grow to 6-2 in the top of the fifth inning. Wilmington scored three runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth. It started with a walk, before an out led to a J.C. Calhoun single to put runners on the corners with one out. Calhoun stole second and the pitch was wild, allowing Brent Case to score and push the score to 6-3. Kelsey would hit an infield single and steal second to put runners at second and third with two outs. Jennings hit a single through the right side to bring the game to 6-5.
