Baseball Loses Late Lead and Falls to Mount St. Joseph Tuesday Night

(FLORENCE, Ky.) – The Wilmington College baseball team lost an extra innings heartbreaker at Mount St. Joseph University Tuesday night, 10-9 in 11 innings. Wilmington held a 9-6 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth, but couldn't hold on, allowing three runs to send it to extras. The Lions walked it off with a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the 11th. A trio of Quakers had multiple hits and multiple RBI in the game. Wilmington falls to 1-7 overall this season.

The Lions took a 1-0 lead after the first inning. In the second, AJ Wolf doubled to start the inning before coming around to score the Quakers first run later in the frame on a two-out JP Donelan single to tie it at 1-1. Mount St. Joseph took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second inning.

The Lions grabbed a 4-1 advantage after two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Wilmington answered with a four-run top of the fifth inning to grab their first lead of the game at 5-4. J.C. Calhoun doubled and was brought in by an Evan Kelsey single. The following two Quakers reached base to load the bases with just one out. Max Gildea brought two runs in with a single up the middle to tie the game at 4-4. Jared Lammert hit a clutch two-out single later in the inning to give the Quakers the lead.

A two-RBI single from Kyle Jennings in the sixth inning and Evan Kelsey in the seventh inning extended the Quakers advantage to four runs at 9-5 heading into the bottom of the seventh. The Lions grabbed a two-out RBI in the bottom of the eighth to make it a 9-6 game heading into the ninth.

The bottom of the ninth saw Wilmington get a quick first out. This was followed by two singles, a walk, and a double to bring in the three runs to tie the game at 9-9 with one out. The Lions had the winning run on third base but couldn't bring him in as the game went to extras.

Neither team got anything going in the 10th inning. The Quakers had one runner reach on an error in the 11th, but couldn't hit him in. A walk was followed by an out and an error in the bottom of the 11th to put runners on the corners for the Lions. The Quakers cut the runner out at home in a fielder's choice on the following play. However, a single to center field followed and won the game for Mount St. Joseph 10-9.

  • Kelsey had three RBI, while Jennings and Max Gildea had two.
  • Kelsey and J.C. Calhoun walked twice in the game, and both scored a pair of runs.

  • Quakers pitching struck out 12 Lions, with Zach Shepherd leading the way with four strikeouts over 3.1 innings in his start on the mound.
