Baseball Struggles Down the Stretch in Loss to Hanover

(DEMOREST, Ga.) – The Wilmington College baseball team was tied heading into the bottom of the sixth inning Friday afternoon against the Hanover College Panthers in a neutral site game at Piedmont University.

The Panthers scored two in the sixth and rattled off another two in the following inning to come away with an 8-4 victory over Wilmington. The Quakers had five hits in the loss and drop to 0-4 to begin the season.

The Quakers got off to a great start, plating a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. After an out to begin the game, Jared Lammert walked and stole second base. This was followed by a Dominic Depa walk before a wild pitch put the runners at second and third with one out. Freshman Max Gildea continued his hot start at the plate, doubling down the third base line to plate the runs and give Wilmington a 2-0 advantage.

The Panthers would score four runs over the first three innings and held a 4-2 advantage heading into the top of the fifth inning. After an out, J.C. Calhoun put the Quakers in good position with a triple to the right centerfield gap before an Evan Kelsey single brought in Calhoun to make it 4-3. Kelsey stole second to put himself in scoring position before the Panthers got an out. In some clutch two out hitting, Depa singled down the right field line for an RBI, bringing in Kelsey and tying the game at 4-4.

The Quakers had a runner in scoring position during the final three innings of play but couldn't bring anyone home in the eventual defeat.
