Baseball Falters in Season Opener at Centre Saturday Afternoon

(DANVILLE, Ky.) – The Wilmington College baseball team struggled in their first outing of the 2024 season Saturday afternoon on the road at Centre College. They played a single, seven inning game against the Colonels and lost 22-4. This drops the team to 0-1 overall to begin the season as they play against Centre again tomorrow in a doubleheader beginning at noon.

The Quakers were unable to score against Centre until putting up four runs in the top of the sixth inning. The inning began with Jared Lammert getting hit by the pitch before a Dominic Depa single put him in scoring position at second base. After an out, Kyle Jennings poked the ball into left field for a single, bringing in Lammert for the Quakers first run of the season.

A Jay Utterdyke single loaded the bases with just one out. Carter Scheben followed with a double to center field to plate a pair of Quakers and make it a 15-3 game. Brent Case was hit by a pitch, leading to the Colonels bringing in a new pitcher. In a fielder's choice, Utterdyke was thrown out at the plate to give the Colonels two outs. Evan Kelsey walked, and the Quakers picked up their fourth run of the inning before making their final out.
