Women's Basketball Falls to Calvin

WILMINGTON, Ohio – Calvin University held a 42-25 rebounding advantage and road that to an 81-50 victory over the Wilmington College women's basketball team in game two of the Fred Raizk Memorial Classic at Hermann Court on Saturday evening.

DePauw University edged Alma College 72-66 in game one of the classic.

The Fightin' Quakers scored 8-of-9 points to open the game thanks to a four points from both Kyria Walker and Zahrya Bailey. The Knights (1-1) battled back, thanks in part to three triples and stout defense, to take a 25-16 lead after one quarter. Calvin pressed that advantage with a 17-9 second quarter to take a 17-point lead (42-25) into halftime. The hosts wouldn't get closer in the second half.

Calvin finished the game 31-of-61 (50.8 percent) from the field including connecting on nine three-point attempts. Wilmington made 16-of-50 (32.0 percent) overall with five of those field goals being from distance. Alongside the rebounding advantage, the Knights also dished out 20 assists and tallied seven blocks. 

Individually, Gabby Timmer led all scorers with 17 points and eight rebounds while Stephanie Coors scored 13 for Calvin. Five other Knights scored at least six points. 

Bailey and Walker finished with 14 and 10 points respectively as the two Quakers to finish in double figures. Walker had a team-best five boards and two assists. 

The second day of the Fred Raizk Memorial Classic gets underway tomorrow (Saturday) with Calvin vs. DePauw at 2 p.m. followed by Alma at Wilmington at 4 p.m.
