Women's Basketball Opens New Year at Capital on Wednesday

WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Wilmington College women's basketball team opens the New Year with a trip to Capital University on Wednesday evening. Tip-off from the Capital Center is slated for 7 p.m.

The Teams: Wilmington and Capital. The Fightin' Quakers are 5-6 overall and 1-3 in Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play having most recently defeated Mount Aloysius College (Pennslyvania) 63-47 at the Hoops for Hope Classic hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University on Dec. 29-30. The Comets are 3-9 on the season having most recently fallen to nationally-ranked Transylvania University 78-38 on Dec. 21.

The Coaches: Wilmington is under the direction of second-year Head Coach Janel Blankespoor, who is in her fourth season with the program having been interim coach during the 2020-21 season and the program's top assistant the two years prior. The 2007 Otterbein College alumna spent stints at Mount Union and Earlham College before coming to Wilmington. Camille McPherson, who's in her first year with Capital, is the program's interim head coach following the abrupt retirement of long-time Head Coach Dixie Jeffers.

The Players: A trio of Quakers - Zahrya Bailey, Kenzie Campbell and Kennedy Lewis - score over eight points per game with Bailey leading the bunch at 11 per contest. Kyria Walker joins both Bailey and Lewis to grab at least four rebounds per game while Lewis and Haley Cook assisted on at least two baskets per contest. Emma Burns leads the comets in scoring at 16.3 points per game, though she has played in his three games to date. Laney Murphy, a starter in each of Capital's contests, scores nearly a dozen points per 40 minutes while Brooke Ommert and Maddie Dougoud both grab five rebounds a game. 

Tale of the Tape: Points per game – Wilmington 62.5, Capital 55.4; opponents' points per game – Wilmington 63.4, Capital 66.5; field goal percentage – Wilmington 39.4, Capital 39.2; three-point percentage – Wilmington 30.3, Capital 35.0; free throw percentage – Wilmington 61.0, Capital 62.7; rebounding margin – Wilmington -1.3, Capital -7.7; assist-to-turnover ratio – Wilmington 0.72, Capital 0.60.
