WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Wilmington College women's basketball team never trailed in an 88-55 wire-to-wire victory over the College of Wooster in non-conference action from Fred Raizk Arena on Tuesday evening.
The Fightin' Quakers opened the game on a 9-0 run fueled by six points from Zahrya Bailey and a triple from Brooke Davis. The Fighting Scots would cut the deficit in half with their first baskets of the game midway through the first half, but the hosts answered immediately as Kennedy Lewis converted a layup and Bailey stole a pass and assisted on another Davis triple. Leading 16-5 midway through the quarter, those two Quakers would end the first 10 minutes with one basket each as Bailey made yet another layup and David hit yet another triple.
Up 25-10, Wilmington all but put the game away with defensive effort to begin the second quarter. Wooster made just three free throws in the first five minutes, and during that time, the Quakers scored 17 points from seven individuals. Alyssa Chritz stopped Scots' field goal drought with a triple at the 5:32 mark, but Kelis Jones answered with a long-distance bomb immediately following.
Wilmington, which led 49-22 at halftime, outscored Wooster 27-16 in the third and coasted to victory.
The hosts made 33-of-67 (49.3 percent) from the floor including shooting 32.3 percent (10-of-31) from beyond the arc. The Quakers also held a 45-29 rebounding advantage, dished out 21 assists and tallied a dozen steals that turned into 23 Wooster turnovers. The Scots' lone bright spot came at the free throw line as 28 Quaker fouls resulted in 34 free throw attempts. Wooster made just 17 of them (50.0 percent), however.
Individually, Bailey had a career game, scoring 19 points on 8-of-9 shooting to go along with three assists, five steals and a plus-minus of plus-36. Davis also tallied a career-high mark in scoring, pouring in 17 points on 6-of-12 shooting with seven rebounds. Mackenzie Campbell and Lewis also finished in double figures including a career-high dozen points for Campbell. In total, 11 different Quakers scored.
Harley Holloway led Wooster with 19 points in defeat.
Wilmington (3-2) is off for a week over the Thanksgiving holiday and heads to Earlham College for the annual #QuakerBowlRivalry game on Tuesday, Nov. 30.
