Women's Basketball Heads to Ohio Northern on Wednesday

WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Wilmington College women's basketball team heads to Ohio Northern University for a 7 p.m. Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) contest on Wednesday evening. 

The Teams: Wilmington and Ohio Northern (ONU). The Fightin' Quakers are 5-11 on the season and 1-7 in conference play after a defeat at No. 11 Baldwin Wallace University on Saturday. The Polar Bears are 11-4 overall, 5-3 in OAC play and coming off a 58-54 triumph over No. 16 Marietta College.

The Coaches: Wilmington is under the direction of second-year Head Coach Janel Blankespoor, who is in her fourth season with the program having been interim coach during the 2020-21 season and the program's top assistant the two years prior. The 2007 Otterbein College alumna spent stints at Mount Union and Earlham College before coming to Wilmington. Mark Huelsman is in his 10th season at ONU including his third as the Polar Bears' head coach. He, like Blankespoor, served as an assistant coach to longtime WC Head Coach Jerry Scheve.

The Players: Zahrya Bailey and Kennedy Lewis are Wilmington's two leading scorers and rebounders are 10.0 and 8.9 points and 4.5 and 4.3 rebounds respectively. Both also assist on over four baskets per contest while Kenzie Campbell, Brooke Davis and Haley Cook all score over a half-dozen points per game. Alissa Stahler and Brynn Serbin both score over nine points for ONU while Kristen Luersman joins the Polar Bear duo in grabbing over 4.5 rebounds per 40 minutes.

Tale of the Tape: Points per game – Wilmington 57.3, ONU 61.5; opponents' points per game – Wilmington 64.4, ONU 47.6; field goal percentage – Wilmington 37.5, ONU 38.2.; three-point percentage – Wilmington 27.6, ONU 28.7; free throw percentage – Wilmington 62.1, ONU 69.4; rebounding margin – Wilmington -2.2, ONU +7.8; assist-to-turnover ratio – Wilmington 0.64, ONU 0.83.

Recent History: Wilmington is 21-30 against ONU since becoming an NCAA Division III member in the early 1990s. The Polar Bears won the first meeting on the season, 55-49 at Hermann Court on Dec. 11, 2021. More information can be viewed by visiting the link above.
