Baseball To Host Mid-Week Games With Berea and MSJ

WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Wilmington College baseball team opens up a week at home with mid-week contests against Berea College and Mount St. Joseph University.

The Schedule: The Quakers will face the Mountaineers on Tuesday followed by the Lions on Wednesday. Both games as slated to start at 4 p.m. from Tewksbury-Delaney Field.

The Teams: Wilmington, Berea and Mount St. Joseph (MSJ). The Quakers are 13-20 on the season and looking to bounce back from two defeats at the University of Mount Union on Sunday. The Mountaineers bring a 9-27 record into the week while the Lions are 12-17.

The Coaches: Tony Vittorio, who formerly led the University of Dayton's baseball program for 18 seasons, is in his fifth season as Wilmington's head coach in 2023. He helped lead the Quakers to a 21-19 overall record last season. Frank Pufall, a 199 alumnus of Vanderbilt University, is in his second season as Berea's head coach while Jeff Newman has been at the helm of the MSJ program for the last decade.

The Hitters: A quartet of Quakers - Owen Baumann, Evan Kelsey, Tyler Shaneyfelt and Dominic Depa - hit over a .300 clip for the season with Baumann's .348 batting average leading the team. Shaneyfelt leads WC in walks (26), hits (39) and is the single-season record holder in runs scored with 48. Caleb Scott has driven in a team-best 29 runs. Jayden Junta leads the Berea offense hitting a .404 clip with 34 RBIs while Ryan Murray has 10 doubles, seven home runs and 27 RBIs for MSJ.

The Pitchers: A trio of left-handed pitchers - Zach Shepherd, Aaron Boster and Trent Mendenhall - have all pitched at least 32 innings for the Quakers. Shepherd carries a 2.51 ERA and is coming off of a complete-game win against Capital University last Wednesday while Boster is approaching his single-season record for strikeouts as the junior has 68 currently. Junta is also Berea's top pitcher having logged 57.1 innings with 26 strikeouts and a 5.18 ERA. For the Lions, Brice McGee has a 5.10 ERA and 54.2 innings to go along with 41 strikeouts.
