Baseball Begins Homestand With Baldwin Wallace on Sunday

WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Wilmington College baseball team opens a five-game homestand with three games at Tewksbury-Delaney Field this weekend. The Quakers will host nationally-ranked Baldwin Wallace University for a twinbill beginning at 1 p.m. on Sunday (note the change in schedule).

The Teams: Wilmington and Baldwin Wallace (BW). The Quakers are 8-11 on the season, 0-2 in conference games and looking to snap a four-game losing streak having most recently fallen 7-1 at Wittenberg University on Tuesday. The Yellow Jackets stand at 15-4 overall and 1-1 in OAC contests after splitting with Ohio Northern University and defeating Grove City College 13-1 on the road in seven innings on Tuesday. 

The Coaches: Tony Vittorio, who formerly led the University of Dayton's baseball program for 18 seasons, is in his fifth season as Wilmington's head coach in 2023. He helped lead the Quakers to a 21-19 overall record last season. Brian Harrison is in his 11th season as BW's head baseball coach. He has led the Yellow Jackets to two College World Series appearances. 

The Hitters: Tyler Shaneyfelt and Evan Kelsey hit over a .300 clip and have combined for 26 stolen bases and 37 runs scores at the top of the Wilmington lineup. Jesse Reliford hits a .323 clip to lead the team and is one of three Quakers, joined by Kelsey and Jared Lammert, to drive in double-digit runs. BW carries a .345 average as a team with Alex Castillo, Sean Kolenich and Carl Penningont hitting over .400 on the season. Castillo, Vincent Capolupo and Luke Vonderhaar have all driven in 20-plus runs. 

The Pitchers: Aaron Boster leads Wilmington in several pitching categories including: innings pitched (38.1), ERA (2.82), wins (3) and strikeouts (46). Kaleb Stines, Trent Mendenhall, Zach Shepherd and Mac Davis have pitched at least eight innings and carry ERAs of between 4.00-5.00. Dawson Gabe is 1-of-2 Yellow Jackets to notch three wins thus far this season wit hthe other being Nik Baldis.

Coaching Connection: Both BW and Kenyon have connections to WC Head Coach Tony Vittorio. Harrison served as Vittorio's hitting coach at the University of Dayton.
