Baseball Falls to Host Piedmont to Close Early Spring Tournament

DEMOREST, Georgia - Piedmont University plated two runs in each of the first two innings and never trailed in a 12-2 victory over the Wilmington College baseball team on the final day of the Piedmont Early Spring Tournament on Sunday.

For the second time on the young season, the Quakers couldn't get out of the first inning unscathed as the Lions tallied two runs on hits off WC starter Eli Martin, who made his collegiate debut in the contest. In the second, things went from bad to worse as Martin hit a batter and walked three straight to walk in a run. Trent Mendenhall then entered in relief and minimized the damage to just one more run. In total in the frame, Piedmont plated two runs without a hit.

After a scoreless third inning from both teams, Caleb Scott got the Quakers on the board with a sacrifice fly, but the Lions scored eight runs on 10 hits over the next two innings to blow the game open. Scott was also responsible for Wilmington's other run as he singled home Evan Kelsey in the sixth.

Martin took the loss for WC, allowing four earned runs on two hits with four walks in 1.1 innings. Six other Quakers pitched in relief with Mac Davis being the most effective, allowing two hits and no runs in 2.2 innings of work. Adam Metivier picked up the victory for Piedmont, pitching six innings and scattering seven hits.

Trace Cate finished 4-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored while Carter Ballstadt, Kolton Hicks and Grant Olson also had multi-hit contests. Tyler Shaneyfelt and Evan Kelsey had multi-hit contests for the Quakers while Scott drove in both runs.

Wilmington (0-3) heads to Alabama for three games next weekend.
