Baseball Gets in Win Column With Victories Over OWU and MSJ

FLORENCE, Kentucky - The Wilmington College baseball team won in different ways on Sunday, defeating Ohio Wesleyan University (OWU) 3-0 in a low-scoring contest and outhitting Mount St. Joseph University (MSJ) to an 8-6 triumph in the nightcap at Thomas More Stadium in Florence, Kentucky.

In the victory over the Battling Bishops, the Quakers, who have had trouble getting out of the early innings unscathed, flipped that script. Tyler Shaneyfelt was hit bit a pitch to start the game, and the program's career leader in stolen bases swiped second shortly after. Two outs followed, but Dominic Depa singled to center field for the game's first run.

WC starter Aaron Boster, who hasn't pitched with the lead often on the young season, allowed just one hit through the first two innings. The Kings High School alumnus did pitch out of a two-on, one-out jam in the third, however, inducing a popup and striking out a batter to end the threat. The Quaker starter would depart after the seventh with a 1-0 lead, and the WC offense gave its bullpen some cushion as Jared Lammert grounded out to third scoring Shaneyfelt and Evan Kelsey scored on a wild pitch.

Jesse Reliford, who started the game in left field, earned a six-out save, allowing one hit and striking out three. Boster earned the victory, scattering five hits over the seven innings with just a single walk and eight strikeouts. Josh Ferreira took the loss for OWU despite a quality start of six innings pitched and a single earned run.

The Bishops outhit the Quakers 6-5 with D.J. Neff hitting the only extra-base hit for either team with a double. Carter Scheben went 2-for-4 for Wilmington while Kelsey, Lammert and Depa had the other singles. WC stole six total bases with Shaneyfelt swiping three of them.

in the nightcap against MSJ, the Lions scored four runs on three hits in the second inning. If it wasn't for a double play, the hosts may have scored more. Trailing 4-0, WC wasted no time battling back as the Quaker batted around in the top of the third. Kelsey, Lammert and Depa all had RBI-hits, and alongside two Lion errors, the Quakers scored five runs on four hits to lead 5-4.

Trent Mendenhall, who relieved starter Luke Chappie to begin the bottom of the third, kept MSJ off the scoreboard for five straight innings. During that time, the Quakers added two insurance runs in the fifth on RBI-singles from Evan Eilerman and Jacob Feltner. The aforementioned insurance runs proved critical as the Lions scored two runs on three hits in the seventh. Once again, a double play turned by the WC defense kept the damage minimal.

An RBI-double from Depa in the eighth made it 8-6, and Reliford earned his second save of the day with a three-up, three-down ninth inning.

Mendenhall picked up the win in relief, pitching six innings and allowing six hits with four strikeouts. Ethan Mason fell to 1-1 on the year for the Lions, allowing seven runs (though just two earned) on nine hits in five innings.

Offensively in game two, Feltner finished 4-for-4 while Depa was 3-for-5 with two RBIs and two doubles. Anton Mere led the way for MSJ with a 3-for-5 performance with three RBIs from the leadoff spot.

Wilmington (2-6) hosts Franklin College for its home-opener on Wednesday. First pitch from Tewksbury-Delaney Field is scheduled for 3 p.m.
