WILMINGTON, Ohio - The Wilmington College women's soccer team held a 19-7 edge in shots, but Emily Patryzk, the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) scoring leader, scored her ninth and 10th goals of the season to give John Carroll University a 2-1 victory in the OAC opener for both teams at Williams Stadium on Saturday evening.
The Blue Streaks (5-4-2) had the better part of possession for the first 10-15 minutes and nearly opened the scoring in the seventh minute when a header from Madyson Rosado from just outside the six-yard box sailed just high. JCU would open the scoring in the 31st minute when Patrzyk beat goalkeeper Lauren Galloway to the ball at the top of the 18-yard box and simply tapped the ball into the open net. Instead of sulking, however, the Fightin' Quakers did exactly the opposite. A minute later, Jada Pohlen tapped a pass to Elizabeth Matthews near the end line. The senior looped a cross into the box that found the head of Alex Wilson, who buried her fifth goal of the season.
As the second half began, Wilmington would fire nine shots in the final 45 minutes and yield just one, but that one proved to be the game-winner. In the 55th minute, Rosado sent a ball to an unmarked Patrzyk, who fired a shot just inside the near post from about six yards out. The hosts would double the visitors in corner kicks (4-2), but were only able to beat goalkeeper Mackenzie Stease once as JCU escaped Townsend Field with a road victory.
Wilson fired a team-high seven shots for Wilmington while Heidi Edens had five and Pohlen four. Though the overall shot total was 19-7, shots on goal were even at five for each team.
Wilmington (6-4-0, 0-1-0) heads to Capital University on Wednesday.
