WILMINGTON, Ohio - The Wilmington College men's lacrosse team couldn't overcome a 9-0 halftime deficit in a 16-6 loss to Heidelberg University in Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) action from Williams Stadium on Saturday afternoon. 

Heidelberg scored the first nine goals of the game including four from Liam Weaver and two from Patrick McCarthy in the first half. The Student Princes (5-5, 2-0 OAC) used a 33-13 shots edge in the first half to take a 9-0 lead into the break.

The teams traded bowls in the third quarter as both squads fired nine shots and a third of them wound up the back of the net. Weaver scored his fifth goal of the game two minutes into the period, but Mike Smith answered immediately, winning the faceoff and scoring the host's first goal of the contest. McCarthy scored unassisted three minutes later while Austin Young Found Connor Judge at the 9:32 mark for the Quakers. McCarthy found Weaver once again for the visitor's last goal of the period while Smith scored his second unassisted with two minutes to play.

Wilmington would open the fourth quarter by scoring three consecutive goals including one from Judge and two from Zac Chucta to get within 12-6, but Heidelberg netted the final four to earn the conference win.

The Student Princes held a 58-25 edge in shots as well as winning two-thirds (16-of-24) faceoffs. Wilmington grabbed 19 ground balls compared to Heidelberg's 25.

Individually, Smith, Chucta and Judge all netted two goals for Wilmington while Eric Wathen grabbed a squad-best five ground balls. Weaver netted eight of Heidelberg's goals on 20 shots including 11 on goal.

Wilmington drops to 2-6 overall and 0-2 in OAC play with the loss. The Quakers continue conference play at Otterbein University on Wednesday evening.
