WILMINGTON, Ohio - The Wilmington College men's basketball team heads to Newport News, Virginia, for the 2019 Christopher Newport Invitational this weekend.
The Schedule: Wilmington will face The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP) at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 30, followed by The University of Texas-Dallas at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 1. Host Christopher Newport University will also face UWSP and Texas-Dallas.
The Teams: Wilmington, UWSP and Texas-Dallas. The Fightin' Quakers are 1-3 on the season after a 79-76 loss to Earlham College in the Quaker Bowl Rivalry game on Monday. The Pointers are 3-0 after opening Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play with a 69-53 win at the University of Wisconsin-Superior on Tuesday while the Comets (2-1) are coming off a 78-62 win over Trinity University (Texas).
The Coaches: K.C. Hunt is in his 13th season as head coach of Wilmington's men's basketball program. Hunt, who has coached two All-Americans and seven of the school's 1,000-point scorers, led the Quakers to OAC Tournament titles in 2010 and 2014. He garnered Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year honors for guiding Wilmington to OAC Tournament title and a win in the NCAA Division III Tournament in 2010. Bob Semling, a two-time NCAA Division III national champion coach, is in his 15th season as UWSP's head man. Terry Butterfield has been the Comets' head coach for 19 years and has won nearly 500 games.
The Players: A quartet of Wilmington individuals – Jeffery Mansfield, DaeShawn Jackson, Abdul Kanu and Colin Myers – all score in double figures while Mansfield leading the team at 18.3 points per game. Jackson, while scoring 13.5 points per contest, grabs 5.8 boards per game. Payton Smith leads the squad in assists, dishing out 4.5 per 40 minutes. Ethan Bublitz leads the Pointers in scoring at 17.0 points per game while Blake Ehrke averages a double-double with 11.7 points and 10.3 rebounds per contest. Jalen Weber scores 22.3 points a game for Texas-Dallas.
