TIFFIN, Ohio – The Wilmington College baseball team fell to Heidelberg University in a pair of Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) games on Saturday, losing game one 12-2 in seven innings and falling 8-3 in the nightcap.
In game one, the Student Princes scored first when Eric DeVore hit a solo home run to left center in the bottom of the second. The Fightin' Quakers tied the game with a two-out double down the left field line from Owen Baumann that scored Jared Lammert in the top of the third, but hosts answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning.
Down 3-1, Wilmington looked to answer with a big inning as Caleb Scott, Aaron Burns and Luke Kleindl all reached base via singles. After a strikeout, Lammert was hit by a pitch to plate a run, but two outs ended the threat with just a single run scored. Heidelberg responded once again with a run in the bottom of the fourth, and closed out the game with a six-run sixth and closed out the game in seven innings with a two-run seventh.
Ross Thompson pitched a complete game for Heidelberg, allowing one hit a inning with three strikeouts and three walks. GlenAllen Anderson took the loss for Wilmington, allowing six earned runs on nine hits in five innings.
Scott finished 2-of-3 for the Quakers while a half-dozen Student Princes had multi-hit games.
In the nightcap, Baumann scored on a wild pitch in the first, but just like in game one, the hosts answered with a run straight away as Mark Ochoa tied the game with a single in the bottom of the first. Unfortunately for the visitors, the top of Berg's lineup did the damage throughout as Tyler Smith and Keaton Mark both went 4-of-5 to aid the Student Princes in plating one in the third, three in the fourth, two in the sixth and one in the eighth.
Lammert and Mac Davis both tallied RBI-singles in the ninth, but the comeback was too-little, too-late. Kaleb Stines took the loss, allowing a dozen hits and seven earned runs with three strikeouts in seven innings pitched. Ryan Hackworth pitched five innings with four strikeouts to get the win.
Once again, Scott was the lone Quaker to turn in a multi-hit game while Mark had four RBIs with a home run in the sixth.
Wilmington (11-25, 10-22 OAC) will host Heidelberg to conclude the 2021 regular season at Tewksbury-Delaney Field tomorrow (Saturday). First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
