Baseball Plays Mount Union in Four-Game Weekend Series

WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Wilmington College baseball team continues Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play with a four-game series against the University of Mount Union this weekend. The Fightin' Quakers will travel to Alliance for a twinbill on Saturday and host the Purple Raiders for a pair of games at Tewksbury-Delaney Field on Sunday.

The Teams: Wilmington and Mount Union. The Quakers enter the weekend with a 7-19 overall record and a 6-16 mark in OAC play after taking 3-of-4 games from John Carroll University over the weekend. The Purple Raiders sit second in the league with a 20-6 overall record and an 18-6 conference mark after sweeping Capital University in four games over the weekend.

The Coaches: The 2021 season continues the new era for Wilmington College baseball team as the head coach Tony Vittorio starts his third season in charge of the program. He most recently served as the head coach at the University of Dayton for 18 seasons. Paul Hesse, a 1982 graduate of Mount Union, is in his 25th season as head coach.

The Hitters: Aaron Burns leads Wilmington in batting average with a .357 clip to go along with three doubles and six walks. A trio of Quakers - Evan Kelsey, Tyler Shaneyfelt and Jesse Reliford also hit near a .300 clip for the Quakers while Caleb Scott joins Reliford and Kelsey to tally double digits in RBIs. Eric Schilling leads Mount Union offensively with 37 RBIs, two triples and six home runs to go along with a .314 batting average. Walker Marlowe and Zack Mazza, both of whom hit over a .375 clip, have combined to steal 29 bases for the Purple Raiders.

The Pitchers: Luke Chappie has been Wilmington's most effective pitcher to date having thrown a team-best 51 innings with two complete-game victories. Kaleb Stines will be riding the momentum of two consecutive complete-game performances while GlenAllen Anderson has pitched well of late, turning in a quality start at Ohio Northern University over the weekend. Thomas Gallant and Carson Davis have both pitched over 45 innings for Mount Union and have ERAs under 3.20. Gallant is one of three Purple Raiders, alongside Dwyane Sumler and Jeremy Sassano, that average over one strikeout per inning.

Coaching Milestones: Tony Vittorio (700) and Paul Hesse (500) both crossed major milestones for career victories as managers last weekend.

Series History: Wilmington is 3-21 against Mount Union since the 2007 season. The teams split a pair of one-run games in the last series, held at Wilmington on April 22, 2019. More information on the series history can be viewed by visiting the link above.
