BEREA, Ohio - The Wilmington College baseball team battled Baldwin Wallace University (BW) to one-run games deep in both contests, but the Yellow Jackets came out on top of both Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) contests on Saturday, winning game one 3-2 in 10 innings and taking the nightcap 11-7.
In game one, Caleb Scott opened the scoring with a solo home run to left field. Both teams would get runners to third in the second, but fail to score. After a scoreless top of the third, Luke Vanderhaar doubled home runs to give the visitors a 2-1 advantage.
Both starting pitchers, Luke Chappie for Wilmington and Dawson Gabe for BW, settled in and didn't allow another run for six innings. The Quakers, however, did a better job of running up pitch count as Gabe left the game after five innings and 104 pitches. The Quakers' starter pitched eight complete innings, scattering nine hits and allowed two earned runs with five strikeouts.
Wilmington would ensure its starter not get tagged with the loss after that fantastic outing as Aaron Burns doubled to open the ninth inning. After a groundout advanced pinch runner Joe Legin to third, Legin would tie the game by scoring via a wild pitch to tie the game. Unfortunately for the visitors, Vanderhaar would deliver the walk-off hit in the bottom of the 10th.
GlenAllen Anderson took the loss for the Quakers, allowing two hits with one strikeout in 1.1 innings pitched. Ethan Boyko got the win for BW, striking out three of the four batters he faced without surrendering a hit.
Alexis Castillo joined Vanderhaar with three hits each while four Quakers – Scott, Luke Kleindl, Burns and Austin Turner – had one hit each.
Game two started just as game one did, a Caleb Scott home run in the first inning. The one, however, was a two-run shot hit opposite field. BW got one run back in the bottom of the first inning, but a Tyler Shaneyfelt RBI-single scoring Evan Kelsey and a Jesse Reliford RBI-groundout pushed the visitors' lead to 4-1.
The Quakers' pitching staff couldn't keep the Yellow Jackets off the scoreboard, however, as BW scored runs in all but one inning including two home runs from Alex Ludwick to earn the sweep.
Aaron Boster took the loss for Wilmington, allowing seven hits and three earned runs with two strikeouts in three innings. Kaleb Stines, Lincoln Howard and Thomas Hueber all pitched over an inning and each gave up at least one earned run. For the second straight game, Boyko got the win for BW.
Ludwich went 4-of-6 with a triple, two home runs and five RBIs while Chris Viamonte tallied a perfect 4-for-4 performance with three runs scored.
For the Quakers, Shaneyfelt finished 2-of-4 with an RBI and two runs scored while Scott and Turner each drove in two runs on one hit.
Wilmington (1-5, 0-2 OAC) will host BW for a pair of games at Tewksbury-Delaney Field tomorrow (Sunday).
