Baseball Faces Ohio Northern in Weekend Series

WILMINGTON, Ohio - The Wilmington College baseball team continues Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play with four scheduled games against Ohio Northern University this weekend. The Fightin' Quakers will host the Polar Bears on Saturday for a twinbill at Tewksbury-Delaney Field before traveling to Ada for a doubleheader on Sunday. First pitch both days is slated for 1 p.m.

The Teams: Wilmington and Ohio Northern (ONU). The Quakers enter the series with a 3-15 overall record and a 2-12 OAC mark after falling to Otterbein University in 2-of-3 games on the weekend. The Polar Bears are 8-11 overall and 7-8 in conference play after a series sweep of Heidelberg University last weekend.

The Coaches: The 2021 season continues the new era for Wilmington College baseball team as the head coach Tony Vittorio starts his third season in charge of the program. He most recently served as the head coach at the University of Dayton for 18 seasons. Gene Stechschulte, a former major league pitcher with the St. Louis Cardinals, is in his 10th season as ONU's head baseball coach.

The Hitters: Aaron Burns leads Wilmington in batting average with a .435 clip to go along with three doubles and six walks. Both Evan Kelsey and Tyler Shaneyfelt also hit over a .300 clip for the Quakers while Jesse Reliford and Caleb Scott join Kelsey in driving in double-digit runs. A quartet of Polar Bears – Corey McMann, Matthew Burkett, Chayten Overholt and Michael Rocco – have driven in at least 10 runs for the Polar Bears with McMann leading squad in doubles (9) and home runs (3).

The Pitchers: The Wilmington pitching staff carries a team earned run average in the double digits. Of those who have pitched over an inning, Luke Chappie, who pitched a complete-game victory in game one of the Otterbein series, has a 5.40 ERA in 35 innings pitched with a team-best 26 strikeouts. Tom Pitko leads the ONU staff with 31.2 innings pitched, 25 strikeouts and a 2.56 ERA. Both Nate Bye and Tim Knapschaefer have pitched over 20 innings.

Familiar Face: Nick Silvis, a four-year member of Wilmington's baseball program and 2020 graduate, is an assistant coach with Ohio Northern.

Series History: Wilmington is 9-15 against ONU since the 2007 season. The Quakers have won four of the last five contests. More information on the series history can be viewed by visiting the link above.
