Baseball Heads to Heidelberg, Hosts Rose-Hulman This Weekend

WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Wilmington College baseball team travels to Heidelberg University for an Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) twinbill Saturday followed by a home game against Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology on Sunday. The Fightin' Quakers doubleheader with the Student Princes is set for 1 & 4 p.m. starts with the single non-conference affair with the Fightin' Engineers also slated for a 1 p.m. start. 

The Teams – Wilmington, Heidelberg, and Rose-Hulman. The Quakers enter the weekend 15-16 on the season with a 4-8 record in the OAC coming off a series sweep of Capital University on Friday. The Student Princes are 12-17 overall with a conference record of 4-8 after they were swept by John Carroll on Wednesday. The Fightin' Engineers enter the weekend with a 18-7 overall record while holding a 9-3 record in their conference (HCAC).

The Coaches - Tony Vittorio, who formerly led the University of Dayton's baseball program for 18 seasons, enters his fourth season as Wilmington's head coach. For the first time in nearly a decade in 2021, the Quakers didn't finish 10th in the OAC, turning in an eighth-place finish with a 10-24 conference mark. Chad Fitzgerald is entering his eighth season as Heidelberg's head coach and 15th year overall as part of the program. Adam Rosen enters his first year as Rose-Hulman's head coach.

The Hitters - A trio of Quakers – Caleb Scott, Dominic Depa and Aaron Burns – each have driven in at least 20 runs on the year. Scott leads the team in batting average at .407 along with a .620 slugging percentage.  Evan Kelsey and Tyler Shaneyfelt have stolen a combined 36 bases thus far this season. The Student Princes are led by Eric Devore who leads the team in batting average (.413), hits (50), and RBIs (32). Mark Keaton leads the team in home runs with seven on the year along with a team-high 26 runs scored. For Rose-Hulman, Josh Mesenbrink leads the Fightin' Engineers with a .372 clip and 11 home runs. Kade Kline and Colter Rodak-Couillard also bat over.300 with a combined 36 RBIs.

The Pitchers - Aaron Boster and Luke Chappie have both pitched at least 40 innings for Wilmington with Boster leading the way in strikeouts (62) while carrying a 5.25 ERA. Jesse Reliford has two saves on the season and has a 4.26 ERA in 6.1 innings pitched. Heidelberg are led by Ross Thompson who has pitched 57 innings this season. Brady Knizner and Thompson have combined for 70 strikeouts on the year. Rose-Hulman's bullpen carries a 4.75 ERA.

Series History - Wilmington is 1-25 against Heidelberg and this will be their first meeting with Rose-Hulman in over a decade. More information on the series history can be viewed by visiting the links above.
