Baseball Heads to Mount St. Joseph for Three-Game Series This Weekend

WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Wilmington College baseball team continues non-conference play with a series at Mount St. Joseph University this weekend. 

The Schedule: The schedule, which was altered due to expected weather and field conditions at Tewksbury-Delaney Field, has been altered. The two teams will play three games at Florence Freedom Stadium with a single game at noon on Saturday followed by a doubleheader on Sunday. 

The Teams: Wilmington and Mount St. Joseph (MSJ). The Fightin' Quakers enter the weekend with a 1-2 record having opened their season with a trio of contests in Carbondale, Illinois, last weekend. The Lions are also 1-2 on the season after three games in Montgomery, Alabama, over the weekend. 

The Coaches: Tony Vittorio, who formerly led the University of Dayton's baseball program for 18 seasons, enters his fourth season as Wilmington's head coach. For the first time in nearly a decade in 2021, the Quakers didn't finish 10th in the OAC, turning in an eighth-place finish with a 10-24 conference mark. Jeff Newman is in his ninth season as MSJ's skipper.

The Hitters: Aaron Burns and Jesse Reliford lead Wilmington offensively as both have four hits, three RBIs and have batting averages over .350. Burns and Caleb Scott have both hit home runs for the Quakers while Evan Kelsey has stolen two bases and Jared Lammert has drawn a team-high five walks. The Lion duo of Andrew Harrison and Tyrell Anderson both have four hits and a double for MSJ while Ryan Murray has the team's lone home run on the year.

The Pitchers: Wilmington looks to improve upon a team ERA of over 10 on opening weekend. Luke Chappie and Kaleb Stines have both pitched over three innings while Mac Davis was the bright spot for Quaker pitching in Carbondale as he didn't alow an earned run with two strikeouts in 2.1 innings pitched. Aidan Post has a perfect ERA in five innings pitched for MSJ. He allowe djust two hits with three strikeouts to earn the Lions' victory on the season.
