Baseball Heads to Asbury For Three-Game Series This Weekend

WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Wilmington College baseball team heads south to Kentucky to face Asbury University in a three-game series this weekend.

The Schedule: The Fightin' Quakers and Eagles will face ff in a single game at 2 p.m. on Saturday followed by a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

The Teams: Wilmington and Asbury. The Quakers are 8-7 on the season after a 5-1 defeat at the hands of Franklin College on Wednesday. The Eagles are 12-6 overall and are coming off a 19-0 shutout of Berea University on Tuesday.

The Coaches: Tony Vittorio, who formerly led the University of Dayton's baseball program for 18 seasons, enters his fourth season as Wilmington's head coach. For the first time in nearly a decade in 2021, the Quakers didn't finish 10th in the OAC, turning in an eighth-place finish with a 10-24 conference mark. Asbury is under the direction of Manny Cervantes, who is in his eighth season as the program's head coach.

The Hitters: A trio of Quakers - Caleb Scott, Evan Kelsey and Jesse Reliford - bat over a .400 clip with over 60 at bats. Scott, who carried a .443 average, leads the team in slugging perentage (.689), doubles (7) and RBIs (19) while Kelsey has swiped a team-best 13 bases. The Eagle duo of Walker Paris and Kaiden Zacharias have hit 10 home runs and 20 doubles. Paris has a .500 batting average. 

The Pitchers: Jesse Reliford and Tyler Shaneyfelt have both pitched low innings for Wilmington, but carry ERAs under 2.00. Aaron Boster, who pitched against Franklin, has a 4.44 ERA and leads the Quakers in innings pitched at 24.2. A trio of Eagles - Paris, Jackson Cole and Alec Lush - have pitched over 20 innings for Asbury. Both Paris and Cole have a 3.03 ERA.

Series History: Wilmington has not faced as Asbury in the last decade.
