Baseball To Host Miami-Hamilton, Travel to ONU to Conclude Season

WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Wilmington College baseball team concludes its 2022 season with a single non-conference game against Miami University-Hamilton and an Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) twinbill at Ohio Northern University this week.

The Schedule: The Fightin' Quakers will host the Harriers for a single game at 4 p.m. on Thursday and head to Ada for a twinbill with the Polar Bears beginning at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

The Teams: Wilmington, Miami-Hamilton and Ohio Northern. The Fightin' Quakers enter the final stretch of the regular season with a 19-18 overall record and a 7-9 OAC mark after splitting a Senior day twinbill with Muskingum University on Sunday. The Harriers are 21-17 on the season having most recently fallen in two games to Alice Lloyd College on Saturday. The Polar Bears are 18-20 overall and 6-8 in conference play. ONU fell to Defiance College 6-2 on Wednesday.

The Coaches: Tony Vittorio, who formerly led the University of Dayton's baseball program for 18 seasons, enters his fourth season as Wilmington's head coach. For the first time in nearly a decade in 2021, the Quakers didn't finish 10th in the OAC, turning in an eighth-place finish with a 10-24 conference mark. Darrel Grissom is in his 21sts season as Miami-Hamilton's head coach while Gene Stechschulte, formerly a pitcher for the MLB's St. Louis Cardinals, has been ONU's baseball coach for the past 11 seasons.

The Hitters: Zach Christensen and Caleb Scott both hit over the .400 mark for Wilmington with Scott leading the way in hits (59), doubles (14), RBIs (48) and slugging percentage (.621). Tyler Shaneyfelt leads the OAC in stolen bases with 28 while Evan Kelsey has also swiped at least 20 bases. Aaron Burns leads the squad in home runs with six. A trio of Polar Bears – Chayten Overholt, Jacob Wenning and Corey McMann – have hit at least 14 doubles while Nate Webb and Ethan Spears have both hit eight home runs. Statistics are not available for Miami-Hamilton.

The Pitchers: Tyler Shaneyfelt has a 3.38 ERA to lead the Quakers pitching staff in 21.1 innings pitched while Aaron Boster, who carries a 5.54 ERA, has struck out 69 batters, marking the most strikeouts for a single Wilmington pitcher in the OAC era (2001-present). He also leads WC in wins on the year with four. Tim Knapschafer leads the ONU staff with 48 innings pitched and a 3.19 ERA. Statistics are not available for Miami-Hamilton.
