Men's Basketball Returns Home to Host Capital on Wednesday

WILMINGTON, Ohio - The Wilmington College men's basketball team returns to Hermann Court to face Capital University at 7 p.m. on Wednesday. 

The Teams: Wilmington and Capital. The Quakers enter the matchup with a 5-14 overall record and 1-11 mark in Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play after a 95-59 defeat at Heidelberg University on Saturday. The Comets are 10-9 overall and 6-6 in conference games having most recently fallen to No. 8 John Carroll University 73-65 at home on Friday.

The Coaches: Micah Mills enters his eighth season with the Wilmington men's basketball program with the 2022-23 campaign being his first as head coach. He helped WC to a 17-8 record during the 2018-19 season and came within a game of the program's first OAC regular season championships. Mills, a graduate of Ohio Valley University, spent three seasons as an assistant coach at fellow OAC member Otterbein University before coming to Wilmington. Damon Goodwin, the most veteran coach in the OAC, has been Capital's head coach since the 1994-95 season. The six-time OAC Coach of the Year has guided the Comets to six NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Tournament appearances. 

The Players: Abdul Kanu is Wilmington's leading scorer at 13.3 points per game while Obed Achirem also scores in double figures and is one of the OAC's top rebounders at 8.3 boards per contest. Achirem is joined by Domenic Farley in assisting on nearly two baskets a contest. Carter Combs averages 11.7 poitns per game to lead Capital while Kaleb Crawford and Joe Thompson both nearly score in double figures. 

Tale of the Tape: Points per game – Wilmington 67.2, Capital 71.5; opponents' points per game – Wilmington 78.9, Capital 72.6; field goal percentage – Wilmington 39.5, Capital 48.5; three-point percentage – Wilmington 31.0, Capital 33.1; free throw percentage – Wilmington 63.2, Capital 66.1; rebounding margin – Wilmington -4.5, Capital +3.0; assist-to-turnover ratio – Wilmington 0.64, Capital 0.90.

Halftime Contest: Pepsi, a corporate sponsor of the College, is sponsoring a halftime giveaway that will give three students a chance at winning $1,000.

Recent History: Wilmington is 17-34 against Capital since becoming an NCAA Division III member in the early 1990s. The Comets beat the Quakers 86-77 in Bexley earlier this season. More information on the series history can be viewed by visiting the link above.
