Men's Basketball Heads to Heidelberg in Search of Snapping Losing Skid

WILMINGTON, Ohio - The Wilmington College men's basketball team heads to Heidelberg University for a 2 p.m. Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) contest on Saturday. 

The Teams: Wilmington and Heidelberg. The Quakers are 5-13 overall, 1-10 in league games and looking to snap a five-game losing skid having most recently fallen 79-62 at Ohio Northern University on Thursday. The Student Princes are 12-6 on the season, 7-4 in OAC games and also riding a losing streak having dropped their last three games. Earlier this week, Heidelberg lost at Baldwin Wallace University 80-77 in overtime on Wednesday.

The Coaches: Micah Mills enters his eighth season with the Wilmington men's basketball program with the 2022-23 campaign being his first as head coach. He helped WC to a 17-8 record during the 2018-19 season and came within a game of the program's first OAC regular season championships. Mills, a graduate of Ohio Valley University, spent three seasons as an assistant coach at fellow OAC member Otterbein University before coming to Wilmington. Andy Bucheit, a 2005 alumnus of Wittenberg University, is in his 10th season as Heidelberg's head coach. He was named the 2020-21 OAC Coach of the Year. 

The Players: Wilmington is led by a pair of frontcourt players as Abdul Kanu and Obed Achirem both score in double figures. Kanu averages 13.8 points per game having scored 21 points at ONU on Thursday while Achirem grabs 8.6 rebounds a game and is one of two Quakers (alongside Domenic Farley) to assist on two baskets a contest. Heidelberg features a balanced scoring attack as four Student Princes - Emmanuel Perdue, Isaiah Young, Tre Watkins and Seth Hohman - all score between 10-14 points per contest. Perdue leads the bunch at 13.3 points per game while Eric Panning leads the team in rebounding at 7.3 boards per contest.

Tale of the Tape: Points per game – Wilmington 67.7, Heidelberg 78.6; opponents' points per game – Wilmington 78.2, Heidelberg 73.3; field goal percentage – Wilmington 39.9, Heidelberg 42.5; three-point percentage – Wilmington 31.6, Heidelberg 34.5; free throw percentage – Wilmington 62.2, Heidelberg 74.2; rebounding margin – Wilmington -4.0, Heidelberg +1.2; assist-to-turnover ratio – Wilmington 0.67, Heidelberg 1.1.

Recent History: Wilmington is 21-29 against Heidelberg since becoming an NCAA Division III member in the early 1990s. The Student Princes earned a 90-73 victory at Fred Raizk Arena ealrier this season. More information on the series history can be viewed by visiting the link above.
