WILMINGTON, Ohio - The Wilmington College men's basketball team opens the 2023 calendar year with an Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) contest at Capital University on Wednesday. The contest is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. in the Capital Center.

The Teams: Wilmington and Capital. The Quakers enter the matchup with a 4-7 overall record and in search of their first conference victory having most recently fallen to nationally-ranked Christopher Newport University on the road on Dec. 30, 2022. The Comets are an even 5-5 on the season and 2-2 in OAC games. Capital travels to Adrian College on Tuesday.

The Coaches: Micah Mills enters his eighth season with the Wilmington men's basketball program with the 2022-23 campaign being his first as head coach. He helped WC to a 17-8 record during the 2018-19 season and came within a game of the program's first OAC regular season championships. Mills, a graduate of Ohio Valley University, spent three seasons as an assistant coach at fellow OAC member Otterbein University before coming to Wilmington. Damon Goodwin, the most veteran coach in the OAC, has been Capital's head coach since the 1994-95 season. The six-time OAC Coach of the Year has guided the Comets to six NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Tournament appearances. 

The Players: Wilmington is led by a pair of frontcourt players as Abdul Kanu and Obed Achirem both score in double figures. Kanu leads the way at 13.7 points per game while Achirem nearly averages a double-double with 9.1 rebounds a contest. A trio of Quakers - Bryce Bird, Collin Barker and Lucas Doty - all score over a half-dozen points per game. Carter Combs leads Capital in scoring at 14.7 points per game while Griffin Doseck and Justin Nixon both grab at least five rebounds a contest. 

Tale of the Tape: Points per game – Wilmington 70.0, Capital 72.3; opponents' points per game – Wilmington 79.5, Capital 72.4; field goal percentage – Wilmington 41.9, Capital 46.8; three-point percentage – Wilmington 34.0, Capital 33.3; free throw percentage – Wilmington 60.2, Capital 66.9; rebounding margin – Wilmington -2.6, Capital +4.8; assist-to-turnover ratio – Wilmington 0.64, Capital 0.9.

Recent History: Wilmington is 17-33 against Capital since becoming an NCAA Division III member in the early 1990s. The Quakers have not won in Bexley since the 2013-14 season. More information on the series history can be viewed by visiting the link above.
