Volleyball Falls to Mt. St. Joseph and Anderson on Friday

CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Wilmington College volleyball dropped a pair of matches at the Charlie Wrublewski Tournament hosted by Mount St. Joseph University (MSJ) on Friday. The Fightin' Quakers fell to host MSJ 3-0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-15) and dropped a tight four-set match (22-25, 25-18, 28-26, 26-24) to Anderson University (Indiana).

In the loss to MSJ, the Lions hit over a .300 clip in 2-of-3 sets as well as holding Wilmington to an even hitting percentage in the second set.

Individually, Sofia Thomas and Joe Bebe both put down eight kills while Blake O'Brien added 18 digs in the back row. MSJ, which hit a .350 clip for the match, was led by Emily Abshire and Grace Young with 16 and 12 kills respectively.

The match with Anderson was much more competitive. The Fightin' Quakers took a close first set as a 5-2 run with the set tied 17-17 gave way to a kill from Cierra Bolender and a Raven attack error that closed out the set.

Anderson took control in the middle of set two to level the match, but Wilmington looked to go up 2-1 after doubling the Ravens early in set three (10-5) and forcing a timeout. Anderson responded, and two long service runs resulted in an 8-1 run and the Ravens on top 17-14. The Quakers forced a bunch of attack errors to tie the set at 19-19, but consecutive Anderson kills at 26-26 gave the Ravens the set.

The start of set four was a reverse of set three with Anderson taking an early lead. Unfortunately for Wilmington, the result was the same. The Quakers battled and fought off three set points, but kills from Shaylen Perry and Kate Todd ended the match.

Sydney Geibel put down a season-high 15 kills while Thomas added 11 and Bolender had seven. Andie Dolven dished out 39 assists while O'Brien added a 26-dig performance in the back row. Emily Abshire and Young combined for 28 kills to help lead Anderson to victory.

Wilmington (2-3) will look to bounce back against Greenville University and Manchester University tomorrow (Saturday).
