Softball Splits OAC Opener at Baldwin Wallace

Softball Splits OAC Opener at Baldwin Wallace

BEREA, Ohio - Playing for the first time in nearly two weeks, the Wilmington College softball team rebounded from a game-one defeat (3-0) in which it was no-hit to earn a series split with a 3-2 victory in game two of an Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC)-opening twinbill on Wednesday afternoon.

In game one, two-time OAC Pitcher of the Year Nikki Camarati flirted with a perfect game, allowing just a single runner - Bailey Hypes - to reach base via a walk. The junior pitched a no-hitter, striking out 18 of the 21 batters she faced in the game. Wilmington starter Izzy Rothrock gave her team a chance by allowing only three earned runs on seven hits with four strikeouts in six innings, but a two-RBI single from Bridie Bricker in the first proved to be all Camarati and the Yellow Jacket defense needed.

In game two, the Quaker bats awoke from a nine-inning slumber in the third when Kylah Morrison hit a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Lindsey Carter. One inning later, Mollie Moore tripled to right center scoring Sam Schwab, and Judaea Wilson gave the visitors a 3-0 by singling in Moore in the same inning. Trailing 3-0, BW got to WC starter Alexis Stringfellow in the fifth, but Carter minimized the damage by allowing a single run to score on an RBI-groundout.

A solo home run from Ashley Matousek in the sixth pulled the hosts within a run, and after Camarati, who relieved starter Hannah Welling in the sixth, stranded two hits in the seventh, the Yellow Jackets appeared to have all the momentum heading into the bottom of the seventh. Carter, alongside the Quaker defense, shut the door as three straight outs ended the game and gave WC a split.

Stringfellow won her third game of the season, allowing just one earned run and two hits in 4.1 innings while Carter earned her first save of the year. Welling allowed two earned runs on six hits despite striking out eight in the loss.

Hayley Suchland finished 3-for-4 in game two while five other Quakers had a single hit. Matousek was one of four Yellow Jackets to tally a hit, the home run, in the loss.

Wilmington (7-5, 1-1 OAC) will continue OAC play by hosting John Carroll University on Saturday. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m.
