Volleyball Opens Season with Tri-Match on Wednesday

WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Wilmington College volleyball team returns to the floor of Fred Raizk Arena for the start of the 2021 fall season on Wednesday. The Fightin' Quakers will face National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics foes the University of Northwestern Ohio (UNOH) and Midway University.

The Schedule: Wilmington will face UNOH at 4 p.m. and Midway at 8 p.m. The Racers and Eagles will play in a match scheduled for 6 p.m.

The Teams: Wilmington, UNOH and Midway. The Fightin' Quakers competed in an abbreviated season last spring due to the COVID-19 pandemic and finished 1-15 during that conference-only season. The Racers played in the spring semester and finished 4-16. The Eagles competed in the traditional fall timeslot last academic year and finished 17-7.

The Coaches: A new era of Wilmington volleyball has arrived Sophie Windover, a former collegiate player and assistant at Heidelberg University, takes over as head coach. She helped guide the Student Princes to a 21-8 record and an appearance in the AVCA Top 25 Poll. Jason Kreiner, a former collegiate player at Adrian College, is in his second season at UNOH while Jonea Rima is in her fourth year guiding Midway's volleyball program.

The Players: Wilmington returns one of its two setters in Sofia Thomas, who dished out 168 assists for an average of 3.43 per set a season ago. Three of the Quakers' top four attackers – Victoria Long, Sydney Geibel and Joy Bebe – all return for their second seasons with the program. Additionally, Thomas and Blake O'Brien bolster the back row as both tallied over 100 digs the spring of 2021. The Racers also feature a young squad with one senior (Aaliyah Alexis) and one junior (Mailys Silvestre) with the rest of the squad being sophomores or freshman. Lynsey Doles and Alysha Tullar are Midway's two seniors.

Series History: Wilmington had not played UNOH or Midway in the last decade.
