Volleyball Opens 2018 Season at Mount St. Joseph

WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Wilmington College volleyball team opens its 2018 season with a pair of matches at Mount St. Joseph University (MSJ) on Saturday.

The Schedule: Wilmington will face host MSJ at 1 p.m. followed by Cincinnati Christian University (CCU) at 3 p.m.

The Teams: Wilmington, Mount St. Joseph and Cincinnati Christian. The Fightin' Quakers are looking to improve on a 4-21 record from 2017. MSJ finished 13-14 and earned a berth in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) Tournament last season while CCU notched an 11-19 campaign in 2017.

The Coaches: Tim O'Brien enters his fourth year as Wilmington's head volleyball coach. He has improved the Quakers' wins total each of his first three seasons and is looking to break through in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) this season. A 2012 graduate of Siena Heights University, O'Brien was a four-year letter-winner for the Saints' men's volleyball team and ranks in seven career and seasonal program records. Abby Smith, a graduate of Mount Vernon Nazarene University, is in her second season leading MSJ while Adam Miracle is also in his second season at CCU.

The Players: Jillian Wesco is Wilmington's top returning offensive threat having averaged 2.11 kills per set as a freshman in 2017. Amber Rox joins Wescoe as the other Quaker to cross the 100-kill plateau last season that's returning. Alyssa McKenzie split the setting duties with the late Lauryn Griewahn by dishing out 216 assists while Karley Schlensker is the tallied a team-high 156 digs. The Lion trio of Riley Brunner, Briana Looney and Cailey Plemmons all finished last season averaging over two kills per set. Statistics were not available for Cincinnati Christian.

Series History: Wilmington is 0-4 against MSJ and 0-1 against CCU since the 2011 season. More information on the series history can be viewed by visiting the link above.
