Volleyball Heads to Manchester for Invitational This Weekend

WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Wilmington College women's volleyball team travels to the Manchester University Invitational in North Manchester, Indiana, this weekend.

The Schedule: Wilmington will face Governor's State University and Saint Mary's College (Indiana) at 6 & 8 p.m. respectively on Friday followed by host Manchester at 11 a.m. on Saturday and Indiana University-Northwest at 1 p.m.

The Teams: Wilmington, Governor's State, Saint Mary's, Manchester and IU-Northwest. The Fightin' Quakers are 1-7 overall and most recently fell to Mount St. Joseph University 3-0 on Tuesday. The Jaguars are 1-11 thus far in 2018, but most recently defeated Calumet St. Joseph University in straight sets. The Belles are 2-4 after notching a 3-0 victory over Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) foe Kalamazoo College on Tuesday. The Spartans are 0-5 on the year and host Olivet Colleg eon Wednesday evening. The Red Hawks have are 7-4 through 11 matches this season.

The Coaches: Tim O'Brien enters his fourth year as Wilmington's head volleyball coach. He has improved the Quakers' wins total each of his first three seasons and is looking to break through in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) this season. A 2012 graduate of Siena Heights University, O'Brien was a four-year letter-winner for the Saints' men's volleyball, team and ranks in seven career and seasonal program records. Pete Gonzalez and Denise Van De Walle are in their third seasons leading Governor's State and Saint Mary's respectively while Ivan Matos (on an interim basis) and Brian Erminger are both in their first seasons with Manchester and IU-Northwest respectively.

The Players: Offensively, Jillian Wesco leads Wilmington with an average of 2.03 kills per set. Karrah Wind and Mariella Szrom have both recorded over 30 kills this season. Jacie Koontz and Grace Ewing have split the setting duties for the Quakers as both average over 2.50 assists per set. Karley Schlensker leads the back row with 140 digs. Dunja Tatic leads the Jaguars with 121 kills and an average of 3.10 kills per set while Nicole Lukens averages 3.62 kills per set for the Belles. Anna Marie Lawrie averages 3.46 digs per set for the Spartans. Statistics for IU-Northwest were not available.
