Volleyball Heads to Earlham For Quaker Classic This Weekend

WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Wilmington College women's volleyball team continues its quest for the first victory of the 2018 season this weekend when the Fightin' Quakers travel to the 2018 Quaker Classic hosting by Earlham College this weekend.

The Schedule: Wilmington will face host Earlham at 4 p.m. followed by Indiana University-Southeast at 6 p.m. on Friday. The Quakers will then face Boyce College and Crowley's Ridge College at 10 a.m. and noon respectively.

The Teams: Wilmington, Earlham, Boyce and Crowley's Ridge. The Fightin' Quakers are 0-3 overall after falling to Franklin College 3-1 on Wednesday. The Hustlin' Quakers are 4-1 on the year and recently swept Capital University.  The Bulldogs are 1-3 on the season while the Pioneers are 5-4.

The Coaches: Tim O'Brien enters his fourth year as Wilmington's head volleyball coach. He has improved the Quakers' wins total each of his first three seasons and is looking to break through in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) this season. A 2012 graduate of Siena Heights University, O'Brien was a four-year letter-winner for the Saints' men's volleyball, team and ranks in seven career and seasonal program records. Lauren Horton, the NAIA's career leader in assists, is in her fourth season leading Earlham's volleyball program. Alexis Ammon and Barry Wheeler are both in their third years at Boyce and Crowley's Ridge respectively.

The Players: Mariella Szrom, who tallied a career high 11 kills against Franklin on Wednesday, leads Wilmington offensively with 16 kills and a .300 attack percentage on the season. Jillian Wesco has 15 kills for the Quakers along with leading the squad in digs with 36. Libero Morgan Householder is one behind with 35 digs. Ashleigh Burton, the reigning Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) Player of the Week, leads Earlham with 62 kills and a .485 attack percentage. Statistics were not available for Boyce or Crowley's Ridge.

Series History: Wilmington is 6-9 against Earlham since the turn of the century. Earlham has won the last six meetings, however. Wilmington has not played Boyce of Crowley's Ridge during that stretch. More information on the series history can be viewed by visiting the link above.

Quaker Bowl Rivalry: Wilmington and Earlham play for the annual traveling trophy "the Quaker Bowl". Currently, Earlham leads the 2018-19 series 2-1 thanks to head-to-head victories in both men's and women's cross country.
