Matthews Nets a Pair in Exciting Senior Night Victory Over Mount Union

(WILMINGTON, Ohio) – The Wilmington College women's soccer team earned their first Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) win of the season Saturday night at home on Senior Night, picking up a 2-1 victory over the University of Mount Union Purple Raiders. They improve to 8-6-2 overall and 1-5-1 in the OAC.

The Quakers fell behind early, 1-0, after the Purple Raiders headed in a goal off a corner kick in the 17th minute. They quickly responded though with an Elizabeth Matthews goal in the 21st minute off an assist from Jada Pohlen. Pohlen sent a beautiful cross into the box, right in front of the net, perfectly finding the right foot of Matthews for the easy score and a 1-1 tie.

Both teams had their chances throughout the remainder of the game, but neither could take advantage as it looked like it may end in a draw. That all went away in the 86th minute, where MJ Little sent a cross into the box that was initially swatted away by the Purple Raiders keeper to her right, but Matthews was right there to clean up the mess and send the ball into the back of the net for the game-winner. Chaos ensued as Matthews ran down to her teammates on the sideline, high fiving everyone along the way in an exciting scene. Wilmington would hold tough in the final minutes to come away with the big victory.
