Women's Basketball Stung by the Yellow Jackets Saturday Afternoon

(WILMINGTON, Ohio) – The Wilmington College women's basketball team lost to the Baldwin Wallace University Yellow Jackets in a hard-fought contest Saturday afternoon in Hermann Court, 55-47. Wilmington led 17-12 after the first quarter, but the Yellow Jackets found their groove and never looked back. Wilmington is now 3-11 overall this season and 1-7 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC).

The Quakers jumped out to a 15-6 lead in the first quarter, with 2:30 remaining in the period. Leading the charge was Natalie Rupp with five points, while Keetyn Hupp and ZahKyria Walker each had three points during the run. The Yellow Jackets ended the quarter with a 6-2 rally to cut the lead to five at 17-12.

Baldwin Wallace began the second period with a 15-3 run to take the momentum and a 27-20 lead. Five Walker points helped shrink the deficit to four, but a late bucket by Baldwin Wallace gave them a 31-25 advantage at the half.

The Quakers started the second half on a 5-3 push to make it 34-30, but Baldwin Wallace would extend their lead to 16 at 48-32 with 1:07 remaining in the third quarter. This would be the score heading into the final period of action.

Wilmington used an 8-0 flurry to cut into the Yellow Jackets lead early in the fourth quarter, making the score 48-40. Rupp and Cassidy Lovett each hit three-pointers to fuel the rally. The lead would be cut to six with 18 seconds remaining at 53-47, but that was as close as Wilmington would get in the loss.

Notables

  • ZahKyria Walker led the Quakers with 13 points in the game, this is her eighth game this season scoring double-digit points.
  • Cassidy Lovett led the team with seven rebounds and tied for the game-high with three assists along with teammate Katie Dryer.
  • Dryer led the team with three steals, while Lovett and Bailey Eddleman each had a pair of steals.
  • Lovett, Natalie Rupp, and Sydney Capen all had one block in the game.
